Wildlife: Steps to take when you have found a sick or injured animal

If you have found a sick or injured bird, raccoon, opossum, or any other wildlife, call the City Animal Shelter at (325) 657-4224 instead of trying to take care of the animal yourself. In the event of an emergency, please call (325) 657-4315.

Most people are not familiar with the diet particulars of wildlife and may inadvertently harm an animal while trying to save it. If taken to the shelter, they can give the pets medicines to relieve their discomfort until they can get them into a rehabilitation center. If the animals aren't badly injured, they are assessed and released back into their natural habitat. Skunks are the only animals the shelter are not allowed to re-home or rehab due to the rabies problem. Everything else is given a chance unless it's suffering and can't be healed.
