Feral
Cat Program
Entire
feral colonies are humanely trapped, then evaluated, vaccinated, and
neutered by veterinarians. Volunteers then return the cats to their
home. Caretakers make sure that their respective colony has food,
water, and shelter.
The Humane Society is now seeking feral
cat colony volunteers to assist in the feeding and tracking of colonized
cats. An unmanaged colony consists of 5-20 cats living on an available
food supply. In the city they are attracted to dumpsters, in suburban
areas to wildlife and food from homeowners, and in the country to
the rodents attracted by feed for farm animals. The size of a colony
generally remains stable when all of its members are trapped, neutered
and returned. If other animals attempt to enter the colony, they are
routed by members. This is the aim of a sponsored colony: care through
control.
TNR
colonies must be maintained by willing neighbors or volunteers to
be worthwhile. If some of the sterile cats are destroyed, new fertile
cats are accepted to fill the vacancy and unwanted litters begin
again. Kittens are often killed, devoured, caused great suffering
throughout their short lives. Kittens in new supervised colonies
are socialized, fostered, adopted. To learn about feral/ unowned
cats, and also the humane Trap, Neuter, and Release program, you
